I watch a lot of YouTube and scroll through a lot of Pinterest, so I feel like I have a pretty good knowledge of fashion and beauty. I am, of course, in no way, shape, or form, an expert at all. In fact, I'd still consider myself kind of a rookie. I have picked up a few tips a long the way though, so I thought I'd share them with you today. I'll try to put them in order, starting with fashion, continuing then with hair and beauty.
1. When wearing anything with any type of skirt, wear a slip.
If you don't know what a slip is, it's like an undershirt, but for your bottom half. They have dress slips, which goes over your head and is like a dress (but would be quite inappropriate to wear as a dress by itself) and they have skirt slips. It's just a silky, thin, material. They sell them pretty much anywhere in the undergarments section and are really cheap and boy, do they make a difference. Slips prevent panty lines, seeing through shear skirts, and also help from keeping your skirt get tucked into your underwear when you sit down. Which is great because that is one of the most important things that can happen to you.
2. Just because it zips, doesn't mean it fits.
I can assure you all that I am not a size zero, as nice as that would be. But just because I want to be a couple sizes smaller, doesn't mean I should buy clothes a couple sizes smaller. Honestly, the best way to flatter your body and your shape is to buy clothes that fit properly. If the number on that tag bothers you that much, you can cut it off. But you'll be glad you got the right size when you get home from an event and don't have to cut your clothes just to get them off.
3. You can always find clothes that look good on you, no matter what size you are.
One of my best friend's six foot. Because of this, she has a lot of problems finding clothes that are long enough and modest. However, she is able to find them. It honestly doesn't matter how tall or short or if you're bigger or if you're super skinny, there are clothes out there for you. And if you can't find clothes that are quite the right size, a lot of clothes can be altered.
4. There's nothing wrong with getting clothes at consignment shops
Honestly, I've found a lot of clothes I like and wear all the time from consignment shops. And they're cheap! Not all thrift stores and consignment shops have torn up, not very nice clothes. You can find good stuff in there. If you're on a budget or simply want more clothes for less money, look up where your local gently used clothing store is.
5. You don't have to wash your hair everyday.
Washing your hair everyday is actually really, really terrible for it. Depending on your hair type, every other day or every third day usually is enough to keep it clean without damaging it.
6. Heat protector is a must.
Even if you're not trying to grow out your hair to donate it or something like that, it's important to keep your hair healthy for many reasons. It's way easier to manage and style your hair when it's not damaged. Your hair looks less frizzy, feels softer, and is easier to brush.
7. Never sleep with your hair up or brush your hair while it's wet.
This causes breakage and is damaging to your hair. Once again, it's really important to keep your hair as healthy as possible.
8. Pinning up freshly curled hair helps your hair stay curlier longer.
I used to think that pinning up your curls was a waste of time. I mean, it couldn't make that much difference, could it? YES. It really does. When you use heat on your hair, your hair forms to the curling iron. When your remove the curling iron from your hair, your hair is still hot. Then, the hair is down and the weight of your hair pulls the curl out some. When you pin it up, let the curl collect in your palm. It should automatically create a kind of tube, you may have to help it out some. Pin it to your head and continue with the rest of your hair and do the same for the rest of the curls. This allows the curls to cool off and set, that way when you let the down, they're not still cooling off and relaxing.
9. Foundation does wonders.
Foundation will even out your skin tone, cover up small blemishes, and set your makeup over all.
10. Highlighter makes you look more alert and awake.
Using highlighter (a light coloured eye shadow) in the corner of your eyes makes you look awake and alert. If you're looking like you had a particularly rough night with little sleep, this will help a lot.
11. A little goes a long way
Seriously, you don't need a lot of foundation or eye shadow, a little bit will go a long way. Remember, you're enhancing your features, not becoming an oompa loompa.
12. Using good lighting can make a huge difference
When doing your makeup, you definitely need to make sure that you're in the best lighting possible. I've learned this from trial and error honestly. I do my makeup in one room thinking everything is blended well and it looks great and then I'll go into another room and look like I'm trying to be Snooki (which on a paper-white, Caucasian girl is not a good look, let me assure you). And once again, you're trying to enhance your features, not look like an oompa loompa so be sure the lighting is good.
13. If you're skin is dry, don't use foundation, use a tinted moisturizer
Lately, because it's been very cold and dry where I live, my skin has been really really gross and flakey and dry. I absolutely hate it, because no matter how much I moisturize, I've still got dry skin. It makes my foundation and concealer really cakey looking too. To avoid that, I use a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation. This gives you the coverage you need while moisturizing and keeping you from looking so cakey and flakey.
Those are all the tips I have for you today, maybe I'll have some more another time. Be sure to let me know if you've found these tips helpful
