Christmas Decorations (Countdown to Christmas Day 3)

My parents and I spent the evening last night getting ice cream (wow ice cream in December, that's Florida for you) and looking at Christmas lights. Looking at the Christmas lights in my neighbourhood is probably one of my favourite things to do. In fact, I did it last week as well on my own when I came home from babysitting. The light's in my neighbourhood are always incredible. There's one house that does a light show for the entire town. They have a sign up year round that counts the days, hours, and minutes left till Christmas. When you drive past their house and turn the radio to a certain station, the lights will blink and they're synced with the music. It's the best thing!

Another staple Christmas item for our family is our Christmas tree. It spins! I don't remember not having a Christmas tree that spins, we had the same tree for so long. A couple years ago, my mom decided she wanted a new tree (they've both been artificial). She was going to buy a new stand, but my brothers and I really wanted the spinning tree, so Mom was able to make some adjustments to the new tree and the old stand so that we could have our spinning tree. I've never seen anyone else with a spinning tree, I think it's the coolest Christmas tree ever!

Cookies for Santa & 3D Cookie Christmas Tree Tutorial (Countdown to Christmas Day 4)

Finally! I managed to complete this post! It only took me nearly a week from when I first wrote it. Anyways, on with the post...

Decorating and making cookies is something you just have to do for Christmas. It's pretty much a crime not to. So last year, I made ginger bread cookies, however my family didn't really care for them as we're not big spice eaters. So this year I decided to make sugar cookies (my mom's favorite). I made them this past Sunday and then decorated them Tuesday evening. I actually ended up using a box mix, which is practically hedonistic in my family. However, they taste pretty good (although they'll never be as good as homemade ones, however, homemade takes ages because the dough has to be chilled.) I used Krusteaz Sugar Cookie Mix and made a double batch.



I wanted gingerbread men and women (in sugar cookie form). My mom also bought me a new cookie cutter that's a really pretty snowflake, so I used that too, as well as Christmas trees.




The hardest (and coolest in the end) cookies to make were the layers of my 3-D Christmas tree. I got the idea from a set in Jo Ann Fabrics. The tree was so cute and I really wanted to get it! However, upon closer observation, there was pre-baked cookies in the set. Gross! So, I decided I would make my own. It was a lot harder than I imagined it (isn't it always?). I used my spatula to create a 6-point star (like a Star of David). I made one, and then put it back on top of the dough to make one the exact same size. I then arranged them to look like a Star of David. I then cut off the overlapping parts and removed the remaining part of the triangle. After, I pressed the overlapping bits onto the bottom triangle. Now obviously, this would not hold up in the oven, so I placed it back on my rolled out down and used the spatula to trace it. Now I have my unbroken Star of David, which is going to be the bottom layer of the tree.

For every new layer of my tree, I took the previous layer and made an identical one using my spatula. I then removed the top star and trimmed it so it was smaller than the previous, and so on and so forth until I thought I couldn't make them any smaller. Then, a made a cylinder with some remaining dough and put little tiny "spokes" on them. It wasn't very pretty, but icing covered it up in the end, so it served it's purpose as the top of the tree. I did have to put a toothpick through it in the oven because it started to fall, but the toothpick kept it upright. You do have to watch so that you don't burn the smaller cookies when in the recipe. This is what the final product looked like:



The cookies were held together by icing and I used a Wilton cake decorating set that I got from Bed, Bath, and Beyond to ice them. I used Tip #21 to ice them.

7 Ways To Avoid Anxiety This Holiday Season (Countdown to Christmas Day 5)

Unfortunately, I STILL haven't gotten around to finishing the other post I had planned, but maybe this weekend, right? *crosses fingers*
So instead, here's 7 ways to insure you or your anxious friend have a minimum stress holiday season.

1. Plan time to relax and unwind, both at the beginning of your break from work or school and towards the end of break.

Go to bed early and sleep in if you can. It's important to make sure you're unwound and unstressed before the festivities, and after before you return to your stressful work or school environment. Spend time pampering yourself as much as you can, take a bath, have a spa day, get your hair done. Just something that's going to make you relax the most. Spend time on your own reading a book or watching a show, emphasis on the phrase on your own. (If you're a friend of someone who deals with anxiety, it's important to remember that sometimes we just need space and time to ourselves. We really appreciate your efforts to try to keep us as relaxed and comfortable as possible, but sometimes that can stress us out as well. Everyone needs time to themselves on occasion.)

2. If you're throwing a party or hosting a gathering, try to prepare as much a couple days ahead of time so you don't feel stressed the day of.

Despite struggling with anxiety, I have been able to throw a couple parties this year that entailed a large amount of preparation on my part. The best thing you can do is do things before the day of. Make as much food as you can the week leading up to the party. Deserts like cupcakes and cakes can always be put in a freezer until the day of, when you can pull them out again to defrost and ice them. Pies, bread, casseroles, and many other food items can be frozen so they stay fresh and don't have to be cooked the day of. Clean house two days before, set up decorations and set the table the day before. All these things can be done in advanced so that your party is as stress free for you as possible.

3. Avoid large parties or situations you know are a recipe for disaster.

Most people will celebrate New Year's Eve by going to large parties where there is possibly (and more than likely) drinking going on. If you don't feel comfortable going somewhere or you feel uncomfortable upon arrival, DO NOT FEEL PRESSURED TO PARTICIPATE. Honestly, there have been so many different times where I've thought about and wanted to go to parties or gatherings, or even concerts where I've just had to say I'm sorry, I don't think it's a good idea for me to go. And you may be reluctant to say no because you feel guilty for turning down the host or or your friends are trying to get you to go, but trust me, you will feel SO much worse if you go and have a panic attack. (If you're a friend of someone who struggles with anxiety, don't pressure them to go to parties. Try staying home with them and just hanging out or renting a movie with a few friends. Frankly, popcorn and a movie in pajamas sounds a whole lot nicer than loud music, tight clothing, and drunk people do.)

4. Don't sweat the small stuff

I know that I'm very guilty of this. I get worked up over the tiniest details, when really, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, and a lot of times not even in that moment. Take a deep breath, walk away for a couple minutes, and either come back to a difficult situation and try to approach it in a different way, or don't come back to it at all. Either way, don't stress out about something. Before you get upset, think "Is this really worth getting stressed out about?". Try to put things into perspective, and remember, your health is most important, so if something is going to cause a panic attack or stress you out, you need to walk away.

5. Sometimes a quiet evening with few good friends is better than a loud one with many not-so-friendly-acquaintances.

I've learned that I have the most fun when I'm with a few of my closest friends, rather than being in a large group of people I only kinda sorta occasionally like. Just because it's the holiday season, doesn't mean you have to go to every big party out there. You're just as cool as you were before getting pizza with friends than being at that party where you would have probably felt out of place at (and maybe even cooler than before!)

6. Remember what the holidays are really about

Remember the holidays are about having fun with family and friends. Be sure to cherish that, and try to focus more on that than what's stressing you out.

7. Do what's best for you and your health. No matter what.

Christmas Traditions (Countdown to Christmas Day 6)

I've just realised that the Countdown to Christmas Day ___ doesn't really make sense because I haven't been blogging for 6 days (or however many is left), that's just how many days are left till Christmas. However, I can't think of a better name that's not 100 characters long or something, so it'll do for now.

I also had another blog written and planned to post, I just had to add the pictures. The thing is, I haven't had time to finish the project so I could take the pictures because I've been taking exams and studying this week. Final week is always the worst, but it makes Christmas break that much more satisfying, so I suppose it's worth it in the end.

Since I don't have anything planned for today, I'm just kind of typing whatever pops into my head and I'm really hoping it'll turn into something Christmas-y to go with my Countdown to Christmas blogging. 

(5 minutes later now, I've come up with something)

Christmas Traditions

My family has a lot of traditions around the holidays and I think I probably hold on to those traditions the most. For example, despite the fact that my brothers are 22 and 20 and I am 16, I still refuse to let my mother put any gifts of ours under the tree before Christmas Eve. I just always love waking up in the morning to a massive load of presents stuffed under the tree when they weren't there the day before. 

I also still make cookies every year, even though I no longer get to leave them out for Santa. My mom still makes the same Christmas brunch she's made every year for as long as I can remember: homemade sweet rolls, fruit (usually pineapples and strawberries), some sort of sausage and egg casserole, and orange juice or hot chocolate. I still wake up early and come downstairs in my pajamas and open my stalking, my grandparents come over,  then we eat breakfast and open the rest of the presents. 

Christmas traditions are something that I cherish and love SO much, simply because it's something that I can rely on to be constant. My mom gets a bit annoyed at times that I refuse to let her change anything up, but change is something that I definitely struggle with (something to be discussed in other blog maybe?). I feel like Christmas is the one day a year where just about everyone can be their 7 year-old self again, ripping off the wrapping paper of presents and playing with your new toys as soon as they've come out of the box.

Christmas Gifts (Christmas Countdown Day 7)

Christmas gifts are like the most important part of Christmas, and every year I've struggled with finding the perfect gift for people and then particularly wrapping it. I'm normally TERRIBLE at wrapping things. However, somehow, my ability as a female to wrap things has suddenly kicked in. I'm not complaining, my gifts look ten times as good as they did last year, when I basically pieced scraps of wrapping paper onto boxes. 

I started out like this, and I was not feeling very confident with my skills.



However, the first one then turned out like this and I felt a little better after that because I mean, look! It's beautiful!


In the end, my gifts turned out beautiful, if I may say so myself.


Unfortunately, I still have three more presents (which still haven't been purchased...whoops...) to wrap. Hopefully those will go just as well as these have and I won't have to spend two hours on them again. Have you guys wrapped any gifts or purchased your gifts yet?

The Christmas Countdown and Christmas Movies

It is officially less than 10 days till Christmas! When I'm writing this, there's 9 days, but you won't see this till 8 days till Christmas. I've decided to do Christmas Countdown Blogging until Christmas, which means a post a day about Christmas-y items. How many times have I said Christmas in the 5 sentences of this post?

Anyways, on with the post.

Christmas movies are something I think every single person in the world that celebrates Christmas has discussed so much, this is probably going to be something that you don't want to hear about at all. Never the less, I'm still going to talk about it, so exit if you so wish.

My all time favorite Christmas movie will always be A Christmas Story. I've grown up watching it and it's a family favorite because of the setting. My family lived in Ohio for a long time, and my dad was born there. Every year, it's on a TV channel for the entirety of Christmas day. And that is not an exaggeration, it plays from 12 AM, December 25, to 11:59 PM. I don't know if there's been a year where my family and I haven't sat down and watched it after Christmas dinner. "You'll shoot your eye out!"


Another great movie is Elf, of course everyone loves that movie. Will Ferrell is absolutely hilarious, and you're not going to find a funnier, more Christmas-y, comedy Christmas film out there.

One movie that my mom and I love to watch is the Santa Clause trilogy with Tim Allen. Tim Allen is one of my absolute favorite actors. He did a fantastic job in those three movies. If you're looking for a warm fuzzy Christmas movie with plenty of comedy in it, The Santa Clause trilogy is the way to go. My mom found the entire set at Walmart for about $10 I believe. Christmas movies are pretty cheap around this time of year, and even cheaper right after Christmas, although a little tougher to find.

And of course, there's the classics: Rudolph, the Grinch, Love Actually, It's A Wonderful Life. They're all fantastic. Let me know what your favorites are and what you're watching this season!

Struggles With Christmas And How to Handle It

It's finally that time of year again! Christmas!!! Christmas is definitely one of my favorite holidays. Everyone is happy and cheerful, you get to wear fun sweaters and drink hot chocolate, and of course PRESENTS! Unfortunately, getting presents mean you also have to give presents, which can be a real struggle for people with anxiety (that would be me). So I thought I'd create a guide for those who have anxiety and how they should deal with that when shopping, and those who are around people who might have anxiety and how they should act.

What kinds of things make shopping difficult for someone with anxiety?

Crowds are a big part of it. So many people running back and forth, squeezed into one big hallway, all talking. It can be extremely stressful. I've had several panic attacks in the mall, and during a panic attack, your senses become way more aware of everything. Noises are twice as loud, smells are twice as strong, and people bumping into you lightly feels like someone has punched you or purposefully tried to knock you down. Not only is it terrifying, it's extremely frustrating. Another thing I have a problem with (and I'm sure others with anxiety do as well) is the people in kiosks. You know, the little booths inside the shopping centers where people try to sell you body products, perfume, cell phones, etc. While I know those people are just trying to do their job, they can be quite pushy sometimes and it can be hard on those of us with anxiety. For example, I was trying to do some Christmas shopping not too long ago in the mall. I had been by myself and was heading to the other side of the mall to meet up with my mom for lunch when a man from a kiosk tried to offer me a sample of some type of nail product. I politely declined and tried to keep walking, when he asked about my shirt. I was wearing a shirt from a festival of voices the previous year. I told him about it and tried to then walk away, but he said "Oh you sing?" and then shoved his hand in my face like a microphone. When I refused, he had his business partner come over. In the end, they got me to try to the nail product. But it was very forced and I didn't appreciate it. Afterwards, I had to find the nearest bathroom so I could calm down and try to avoid having too lengthy of a panic attack. Please, if you work in a kiosk, no means no. Don't try to force your products on people. Not only is it rude, it can also really upset those of us who are more shy.

How do I avoid panic attacks when Christmas shopping?

Shop online as much as possible. If you can't shop online, make a plan. Plan out what you're going to buy for people, or at least have SOME sort of idea. Plan what stores you're going to go to and try to go at a time when you know it will be least crowded. I have found that Saturday mornings as soon as the malls and shopping centers open are when it is least crowded, at least where I live. When you plan ahead what you're going to get and know what stores you're going to go to, you don't have to spend as much time browsing and going in and out of every store, being interrogated by the shop workers. Also, DO NOT leave your shopping till last minute. This is gaurenteed to make it 20 times as stressful, not to mention the crowds in the shopping centers are going to be at an all time high. Try to shop a couple weeks in advanced.

I've planned ahead, but when I got to the store, they didn't have what I needed! I'm out of ideas and panicking, what do I do?!

This happened to me just the other day when I was shopping for my boyfriend, so I know what that's like and that's why I'm writing about it. First off, it's okay. It won't be the end of the world if you can't find exactly what you wanted to get for someone, I can promise that. If you're completely out of ideas, call up a friend or family member who knows the person you're buying for well. Tell them what happened and explain that you're desperate for gift suggestions. Just about everyone has been there before, it won't seem out of the ordinary. Once they've given you ideas, go to a secluded area and plan out where you think this item might be. You may have to check a couple different stores. If you know it won't be in stores or you'd rather wait to plan out another trip to find the item, continue on with your shopping.

What do I do when I've had a panic attack?

If you've had a panic attack in a shopping center or store, there are several things you can do. These are all perfectly acceptable things to do, and in situations like this, you need to do what's best for you, not anyone or anything else.
1. You can leave. You can go back to your car or decide you just need to go home. 
2. You can step outside or find a bathroom or secluded area and try to calm down on your own before continuing to shop. If you can't find a place, you may speak to the store manager or have a friend do it for you so they can help you find somewhere to calm down.
3. You can ring a friend. If I'm shopping on my own and I feel panicky, I call up one of my best friends because I know they'll help me relax.

What should I do after the panic attack?

After you've managed to calm down, try to take it easy. If you immediately put yourself back into a chaotic environment, you're just going to start panicking all over again. I suggest taking a break to get something to eat, or maybe grabbing some coffee in an uncrowded coffee shop. Go some place where the environment is going to be relaxed and calm. After taking a break, you can get back to shopping as planned.

I've done all of this, but I've now had multiple panic attacks in one trip. What do I do?

Well, obviously I don't have all the answers and some of this stuff may not help, but if you're having multiple panic attacks in one trip, I would suggest that it is time to go home. After you get home, you can either plan another trip for another day, or you can choose to do the remainder of your shopping online. Homemade gifts are also always appreciated!
